I’m new to the IS F platform, but the S2000 crowd is seeing a 1 sec per lap per min improvement just moving from a 9” wide to 10” wide wheel on 255 tires. So 2 sec/lap improvement for a 2 min/lap track. All other variables held constant (tire size, suspension, etc) other than the wheel width. So same mechanical grip, just the increased feedback is giving people the confidence to go faster.

This is probably why later IS F went to a wider wheel, even though tires stayed the same size.
a 275 usually runs about 9.7 inch tread width, plus or minus. So a 265-275 would work well with a 9.5 according to that methodology. What is the tread width on your 255s?

^^^^A 285/30/19 will work fine on a 9˝" wheel.

I typically don't always go by the tread width. The idea is to slightly stretch the tire a bit so the sidewalls are preloaded, meaning the sidewall will deflect less before it responds. It also gives the best contact patch (usually not a problem unless the wheels are too narrow for the tire). I typically like to go look at the recommended wheel widths for a specific tire. The better performing will be the widest wheel that the tire will fit.

Here are some examples from tire rack.com for the Fallen RT660 (just searched for same tire available in a 275 for 18" and 19"). Note that what's ideal may not necessarily fit well.

Most 255/45/17 tires for the S2K will take up to a 10" wheel. I run a 245/45/17 on a 9.5" wheel. I've seen some running a 265/35/18 on a 10.5" wheel (requires lots of work to fit).

It should fit, but you would get more feedback/response on a 10.5" wheel. That could be hard to make fit though.

Agreed on not going by tread width alone. The sidewall height will make a big difference in the amount of stretch for a given wheel width. For example a 245/30/19 on a 9.5" wheel will be far more stretched than a 245/45/17 on a 9.5" wheel.

From your experience, what size would you recommend for a 2012 in the S-04?

-Currently researching for my first summer tire purchase

There is a noticeable difference in how the car feels and a noticeable difference in fuel economy. Narrow tires (and wheels) get better gas mileage and the steering feels significantly lighter even with the 2014 steering ECU installed. The A/S tires don't have anywhere near the ultimate grip the summer tires do, but for 99.5% of street driving the difference is not noticeable. The big difference is feel, and the wider tires and wheels definitely need more steering effort 100% of the time. When you have that rare moment to push the car, the summer tires are definitely more fun, but by the same token, the A/S tires don't chatter like a rabid squirrel on U-turns under 45F temperatures.

You have to find the balance that works for you. Both approaches have merit, you just need to decide which of them suits you better.
Sorry to resurrect this - I'm looking to upsize tires in my '13 ISF and am considering 245/35/19 and 275/30/19, but not sure if I should go 255 in the front. Do you still run/recommend 255 in the fronts? Have you tried 245 fronts as well (and if so, how do they compare to 255)? Thanks!

Check your other thread.

Yes, I ran 245s on the front with my 2008 wheels before I got the 2014 wheels. I like 255 on an 8 1/2" rim way better.
