Default Retrofitting Mechanical Limited Slip Differential (LSD) 08-09 ISF

Hi guys!

I read the pdf spec sheet on the new 2010 ISF and was excited to know that a form of Mechanical LSD (not just VDIM) would be offered on the new models. I am about to get my ISF, after waiting so long, and i'm definitely not waiting another 6 months to get the 2010 model.

When i first made the choice to take the plunge and by the F, the only thing that bugged me was the lack of a real limited slip. I know some have said that VDIM makes up for it but that was the only thing that, in my opinion kept the F from being as engaging if not More engaging than the M3.

I was wondering though since we now know that a Torsen FD21AT will be fitted on the 2010, would it be possible to Retrofit it onto the old F? I assume that there would be a possibility for this to happen, however, i also acknowledge that there will be a myriad of ECU issues, to do with VDIM, Brake VDIM etc to deal with.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

it would be ideal if lexus dealers could reflash you to take care of any vdim issues, but fat chance.

If they do figure it out, I can assure u that it'll be a expensive upgrade. If it was easy and cheap to do then it will definitely ruin the 2010 ISF's market. Everyone would just buy 2008/09 models and have the LSD installed if it was that easy. Also some Merc AMG cars have LSD upgrades on older models cuz newer models came with it and it was at least 10k upgrade.

The entire differential brand new is $2k. Lexus won't be raping retrofitters by charging $10k for this.

Well lets hope they don't. Just have to be patient and time will tell if it can be retrofitted

I for one do not see any issues with retrofitting the TBD. The threshold of the Diff I'm willing to bet will be way less that the "VDIM." Again VDIM isn't a real eletronic lsd either, it just exerts an "electronic lsd effect." It's just Lexus' fancy way of saying traction control.

I will be retrofitting one for sure. $2K part plus approx 8 hours labor, not too too bad. I know it will make a huge difference.

If you're able to update the ECU, everything should work fine. You must cancel the electronic LSD and change the way the VDIM works.

Kevin, let me know how it goes! Any tips/manuals and tests would be appreciated.

I am only wary of changing things because, i am all the way in Malaysia, and my F will be the only one in the region.

That's the whole problem. They moved the ECU under the hood. It is under the HVAC blower motor in our cars. They essentially did a complete redesign, so you won't be able to plug n' play the new ECU.

I am seriously hoping Kevin is right and the mechanical setup takes over long before VDIM creates an argument between the two. The proof will be on the track in slow turns where the inside wheel gets very light. If the VSC light flashes, the mechanical unit is being overridden with braking. If not, we're golden.

Lobuxracer, does that mean it is impossible to do anything to the ECU or it is still possible but just with lots of labour?
