Done the 60k mile Valve Clearance Inspection yet?
Just curious who has done this (if anyone), and I don't mean taken it to a shop, I mean actually done it.
I'm getting closer to the magic mark and just reviewed what I'll need to do on TIS. It's not pretty or simple if you have to make an adjustment - the cams have to come out according to Lexus. It really makes me appreciate the simplicity of adjusting bucket and shim valves.
FWIW, shims are available from 2.00mm to 2.80 mm in 0.02mm increments.
Everything else about this looks like a million others I've done, but strangely enough, they could have designed this set up with threaded posts and locknuts pretty easily. They chose valve stem cap shims. Only Yamaha knows why...
Also FWIW, if no one else has done it, I'll do my best to document it and post it here for the brave to follow.
Last but not least by any means, I'm hoping it will be just like my Supra - everything in spec (I've checked the Supra three times and they've never changed in 150k miles!)

Fully validated parts list for anyone who plans to do this. If you are under 100k miles, most of this won't be necessary. If you are over 100k miles, you should replace everything on this list.
11193-38030 = 8 - Gasket Spark Plug Tube
23224-38010 = 2 - Gasket Fuel Pump Spacer
23915-46011 = 2 - Insulator Fuel Pump
23279-74010 = 4 - Gasket Fuel Pressure (Pulsation Damper)
11229-38030 = 2 - Gasket Cylinder Head Cover No. 3 (Valve cover oil filter)
11159-0P010 = 2 - Gasket Camshaft Bearing Cap Oil Hole No. 1
11159-0S010 = 2 - Gasket Camshaft Bearing Cap Oil Hole No. 2
90301-A0029 = 4 - O Ring (Oil Drain Pipe)
11213-38060 = 1 - Gasket Cylinder Head Cover No. 1 RH
11214-38040 = 1 - Gasket Cylinder Head Cover No. 2 LH
90301-09028 = 1 - Oil Tube O-Ring (dipstick tube)
90210-08045 = 6 - Washer, Seal
15678-46020 = 2 - Filter (for the exhaust cam oil control valve)
You should also be replacing your spark plugs if you're doing this at the 60k mile interval recommended for the 2008 IS F.
Tools you will want to have on hand:
22mm open end crowfoot for the fuel pulsation dampers on the HPFPs.
21mm flare nut wrench or preferably socket for the HPFP's fuel connection to the rail.
16mm sparkplug socket with locking extension
Very narrow flat blade screwdriver to release the connector block from the top of the ECM box

I also damaged a couple of wiring harness "protectors" in the process. Finding the part numbers for these can be really challenging. Many techs do not bother to replace the broken parts even at the dealership because it's easier just to tape it up and move along.
While you are ordering all that stuff, get the sparkplugs too. They're due at the same interval as the lash inspection on the '08.

Looking at the procedure, I'm betting this would be at least 6 hours flat rate. One of the alarming things is they tell you to remove the high pressure fuel pump, and one of the connections is a flare nut to a fitting on the pump. There is a very strict warning telling the tech if the fitting on the pump turns (the directions say you MUST hold it with a second wrench), you must replace the pump (!?!?!) so it looks a bit on the daunting side for the inexperienced.
Also, if you have to adjust anything add another 6 hours to the job because the cams have to come out and be properly installed again. So I'm betting the quote for this will be pretty alarming. I have no intention of asking how much, I'm just going to do it.

Dealer did my left side to fix engine ticking noises and it didn't solve the problem. Anyway, with shim parts and labors, the warranty repairs came out to almost $2K. I'm sure out of warranty work would cost much more.

Not really. Powertrain warranty is to 72k miles. This is maintenance anyway, so they're going to expect you to pay for it regardless. The only way to get them to pay for this is to complain about the valve noises if you have them. If you don't you're pretty much going to pay no matter what.
While it's not exactly cheap, it's still not as expensive or frequent as the GTR transmission service.

Has anyone else done the valve clearance check and spark plugs ? On the scheduled 60k maintenance plugs are to be changed, just wondering if you guys are following this. Does anyone see a problem with following mileage over time when it comes to maintenance?

I'm going to check the valves and replace the plugs when I get to 60k. I have less than two thousand to go right now. My expectation is the valves will all be within specification. If they are on the loose side, I'll likely leave them alone because a loose valve is a happy valve. If any are tight, then I'll be removing the cams (much to my dismay) to make adjustments. I might also see if there is an effective way to change the shims without removing the cams.
Having this done at the dealer is going to be ~$500 just for the check. Adjustment will be significantly more.
If I run into any issues to make me believe everyone should be checking this, I'll post up what I find.
