In addition to rotating the tires, it would probably reduce the understeer quite a bit. On my previous car (G35 Coupe 6MT), you had to maintain a certain amount of stagger or the VDC would not function correctly. I don't know how it is for the IS. On the Camaro SS I owned, it was fitted with 275/40-17s all the way around, making for fairly neutral handling. That is until you gave it a bit of gas :-p
yeah DAT!!!! quit being cheap!!! get sum 20's staggereddd!!! need me to come over and show u what 20s staggered look like?!?!?!! huh dat???? hahahahahaha GOOD LUCK!!
Sorry but IMO, a RWD car with non-staggered rims is a bad choice, I find it has a little better handling, I mean the 350 doesnt put out like 400lbs tq so its not like its going to fish-tail all the time. But if money is your issue, than go for it.
Why not just run the same width wheel and same tires but run a lower offset in the back? That will give you more lip in the back for the appearance of a staggered setup.

I don't agree with your statement. Maybe it has better handling for your driving style, but doesn't necessarily mean it's decrease in performance in anyway.
