Is the Extended VSA Warrenty Worth it? 2008 Is250 47.6k
Hi,
New to the forums and Just purchased a 2008 Is250 mileage 47.5k with Navigation, heated/cool seat (don't know the name of that package) About a week ago. The question is "Is the Extended VSA Warrenty Worth purchasing?" Only thing that make is seem worth it, if the navigation radio "fails on me" along with whatever other saving I would recieved, But when i searched forum, it might only be with the 2006 with that problem.
I'm Pretty much a DIYer and will be planning on doing all services myself. Thanks for all advice ahead of time.

I wouldn't bother, but other people will say to do it....it's really for the piece of mind i guess.
There is no major engine issues with the IS250, nor are there any transmission issues so i wouldn't really bother with it. If your only worried about the navigation not working, i still don't think its worth it. You could just save that money you would spend on the warranty and keep it in savings. I've not heard of too many people having issues with the navigation anyway.
In the end its up to you though, if you sleep better knowing you have the warranty, go for it. If you can do most repairs yourself though, and think your car has been kept well, i wouldn't worry too much about the extended warranty. But if you think the car may not have been maintained well by the previous owner, or your just not sure, it might help you sleep at night

This is a good thread on this question: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...-warranty.html
Here are my thoughts: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/6288224-post18.html
Basically this just comes down to your preference for risk. It's difficult to base your decision on others' opinions and experiences because people have usually either had great experiences with extended warranties or terrible ones, which is why it seems most discussions of extended warranties can't go on without overly emotional, hyperbolic statements.
The IS is a very reliable car and there are few big, systemic and expensive problems that affect them. However, if one does affect you, it could be a significant expense - the cam gear issue, for example, can be $1000+ repair (my 2007 IS350 with 58k miles on it just started exhibiting signs of this, but my car's CPO so it will be covered).
I'm happy with my purchase of an extended CPO warranty, because even if I don't make use of it enough to make up for the dollars I spent on it, it affords me peace of mind which is worth quite a bit to me.

Given the pricing I've seen on even minor things (like the dash needles going out, or replacing a blown ML sub), plus the fact I got the $500 gift card to offset 1/3rd of the cost, the VSA was a no-brainer to me.
A single problem, even a minor one like the needle thing, and I'm even or ahead of the game.
Plus, I can transfer the warranty, so it'll more than pay for itself in added resale when I can advertise the 7-year-old car as still carrying a year of Lexus warranty when I sell it.

That's another huge benefit to the VSA, the transferability to the next owner. Your car will get $1000+ more than other cars on the market (in private party sale) because it's got this warranty.
I think your first step should be calling Jerry Johnson (contact info is in the above linked thread) and asking his price on a Platinum VSA for your car. Then you can decide based on that whether you'd like to go with it.

yea i emailed him and his price was much cheaper than lexus of tampa bay. The only thing my dealer does that is kind of cool is they let you pay 10% and finance the rest over a year a 0% interest. I dont usually finance anything this expensive but 0% interest is the best especially when your thinking time value of money! Wonder if Jerry does that...never asked.

Although the IS is generally reliable there are a few issues:
1. the Nav screen freezing up
2. instrument needles fading out and going dead (led's)
3. a known problem with the a/c drainage system where it gets blocked and dumps the water all over your nice carpet requiring possible carpet replacement and expensive repair (remove dashboard type of repair).
The more electronic gizmos these cars have the more opportunity for something to go wrong. I keep my cars 8-10 years so I bought the 8 year/75,000 mile VSA.

Hi,
New to the forums and Just purchased a 2008 Is250 mileage 47.5k with Navigation, heated/cool seat (don't know the name of that package) About a week ago.

This means it has warranty for 2 years after the original 4 years. For a total of 6. Or 20.000 more miles. After the original 50.000 miles.
So which ever comes first is when the warranty expires.
6 years or 70K miles.

shop around on the price..they can vary greatly for the same package (the Lexus package, not some after-market 'good luck' package). Follow the link from Salduchi above..find the "Troy reference link". Get a quote from the guy.
I did and asked my local dealer if they would match it..sure enough...Its the same plan. I bought it right before my factor warranty was ready to expire...Nuts to buy it before then! Its also pro-rated refundable should you sell/wreck, etc. the car.
To me its worth it...Like others have said..have a Nav screen go out on you..and ouch...

I gotta agree... On the advice of somebody in the forum I contacted Jerry Johnson) and purchased a zero deductible Lexus warranty for my IS-F.
Super easy, received the paperwork from Lexus a couple of days ago. 100,000 8 year warranty. Huge savings. HUGE!
Thanks Jerry!
