Default iJDMTOY LED DRL Review/DIY No Drilling *UPDATE w/pics

I ordered the iJDMTOY LED DRLs, not FULLY investigating the install process.
Here's my story:

After ordering, shipping arrived promptly and box included everything it said it would. 2 LED bulbs and 2 decoders for the is250. After purchasing, unfortunately, I started reading how people were putting holes in the moisture covers of the headlights. This sounded totally contradictory of the purpose of that shield, but I thought I'd give it a shot to install without leaving anything unsealed. After getting everything removed to get to the headlights a started to see just how LITTLE space their was for these large decoders in this kit.
FYI:
It will not fit behind any of the moisture shields.
It will not slip underneath the silver housing and bulb socket.

I still wanted to stick to my plan that I did not want to drill or break the seal of the housings.

I then noticed that there was a space behind the AFS structure of my HID bulb and motor housing, not the high beam/DRL housing. With a little work, I was able to fit the decoder behind the HID housing and not affect the rotation of the AFS motor. Home free right?!?! No....after it fits, of course the wires and connectors are too short to reach the other housing, also the connectors could not fit between the two. Here comes some ingenuity.

What I decided to do was extend the wiring of the decoder, and not attached the connectors UNTIL the wiring was able to run through to the other side of the housing. Only then did I splice in the connectors so they would be in the right housing. After a bunch of butt connectors, and making sure no wires were interfering with the AFS rotation once again. I was able to get the LED's working and with NO BREAKS IN THE MOISTURE SHIELDS.

Now, in another thread there was a member that received a harness with a much smaller decoder from iJDM that was able to tuck in the first housing just fine. However, it seems that these are a prototype and not sure when they'll be fully available.

Even though this project took a little extra work, I'm still happy with the outcome. The lights look great and are just a tad "cooler" color than my stock 4300k HIDs. I also decided to disconnect my parking lights as I did not have LED bulbs for them, and the stock yellow lights look like crap behind the LEDs!!! I think these LEDs would match 5000k HID bulbs absolutely perfect though. I know alot of people have VLEDs which are easier to install, but I've also heard those have a pretty quick defective rate, which may just be because they sold so many sets (Rule of Large Numbers). This is a decent alternative, and when the new decoders come out, it will be a great alternative.

Please let me know if you have any specific questions.
-Bill

After covers/airbox removed. Shows the 2 moisture covers pf the headlights.

Wires run behind the silver shielding, but INSIDE the housing to the where the high beam/DRL bulb socket is.

Stock parking lights + LED DRL, don't go well together, remove or replace LED

Finished product

looks great Bill!... I'll let you guys know when the new sets of decoders comes in. I was hesitant on retrofitting my moisture caps myself but I was having a hard time shutting it sealed and didn't want to squeeze the harness so I just put extra foam & tape.

on your cleverness!

I used ijdmtoy for all my interior lights. Brightness is perfect and is half the price as other LEDs. Great products

Thanks Slixx. Just want to return some info for a community that has given so much info to me in the beginning. I took some good pics with a dig camera, but working on finding the cord, might go buy another one....

I'm not sure that HIDs are the best way to go for the 9005 bulbs that run your Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) and high beams. HIDs aren't meant to be flicked on and off quickly (like when you flash high beams to warn someone). This is why the LED option for DRL seems to be so popular. There's a bunch of guys here that can answer this question better in the lighting replacement guide/DIY threads. Do research, there's great info here!

Speaking of which... I keep forgetting to take some installed pics... I'll take some later.

And I don't know why those damn USB cords are always laying around when you don't need them and vanishes when you do need them!

Sounds like way too much work to simply have your DRL's blue instead of halogen yellow.

Too much work yes but well worth it IMO to differentiate from a stock 2IS. Heck, I removed my front bumper and reinforcement bar just to change the front signal bulbs.

Pics should be up in a bit.

It's relative. While you might think its work, I look at mechanics as a stress relief. This is nothing compared to the heads, cams, or transmissions installed on my other vehicles...just a fun 1-2 hrs in the garage.

I thought about that, but you have to do the reverse if the decoder ever breaks. Too many times breaking that seal, will eventually cause a leak.

I agree, and it was even easier than that job.
