Active Noise Cancellation & Engine Sound Enhancement on LC!!!??? What the...

The rain finally stopped. About to go for a drive through the mountain roads where things are relatively quite. Does anyone know exactly at what RPM / driving mode we can be sure that the 'exhaust' valves will fully open? I'm about to go and test the sound with the ESE turned on & off. Planning on driving in manual mode at a specific RPM to see if I hear any differences between ESE turned on, or off.
Also, for those of you with pre-24 models: It wouldn't hurt for you to download the app and connect it via OBD connector (if you have one). The app allows you to connect to the vehicle, and download all parameters that can be changed. You don't have to pay for anything until you want to make changes. At the very least, you'll know if this feature is something that Carista has discovered and accessed, or indeed only available as an option for the 24 models.
I'm really curious and concerned as we were all led to believe that there are no fake sounds coming from the speakers on this car. But that's what ESE is.

in both Sport and Sport+ modes the valves are fully open and permit the full resonance of our deep throated V8.
try bumping around at 4000rpm; and at ~ 6000, if you can pull it off, be prepared for the most beautiful
induction wail this side of F1..... give it a rip !

I finally test-drove an LC coupe the other day in Austin (a used '19 with the Touring package and Torsen, so exactly like I'd like one), and it was immediately obvious the intake noise is valved, as it came in all of a sudden. Super fake and annoying. Hope there's no fake speaker noise involved, but I'm afraid there is some too. The exhaust valves are not the typical valves at the end of the mufflers, like almost every other such system. The valves on the LC are BEFORE the mufflers, so not sure how they work. I drove over some twisties in sport+ in manual mode, and open the window, and could hear the exhaust some, so at least it seems to make noise outside too. If I end up with one, I'd immediately remove or plug the intake noise; I HATE that noise, especially as fake as the LC, which comes all of a sudden full blast. Porsches have that too (and the 911 has TWO), and they're easy to plug. I did that on my ex-Cayman GTS, and it sounded even better, without that annoying intake noise, which was a little too much noise level for me. I didn't go WOT, but the engine sounds really good (as expected), and also the transmission shifts acceptably quick with the paddles, so no issues there. Fortunately, not like the ultra laggy RC-F. Handling wasn't great, since it's a whale of a car, but better than I expected (especially without the handling package, which I do NOT want), and natural, without all the fake crap on the handling one (rear steering, VGRS). What a shame that car wasn't newer, and with 5K instead of 30K+ miles, since touring models are very hard to find. But I'll absolutely consider one now. I was expecting the ML to be better, but at least it's up to par with the Bose on the C8, and slightly worse than the Meridian Surround on the P450... BUT the Jag is much louder inside the cabin, so the ML might actually sound better while traveling. I do not like the changes on the '24, so will have to look for a pristine '23 (or '22), with <5K miles, and plenty of warranty left. It seems a little quieter than the C8 (which was surprisingly quiet -with A/S tires), but couldn't go over 50 mph, so who knows.

1. Intake tube is valved, and it opens either at a certain RPM ranges or based on the throttle % / rate.
2. My biggest fear: FAKE speaker intake or exhaust tone thorugh the speakers. I will test this asap.
3. Regarding the exhaust valve: I'm not sure about the differnces with other vehicles exhaust valve actuations, but there is a an aftermraket solution for pre-24 MYs. No solution for this on the 24 MYs yet. Unless you go aftermarket exhaust with valve controller built in.

Regarding the #2 above (my fear): What if the ESE system is all or nothing? If I turn this thing off, I'd welcome the elimination of the fake 'exhaust' sounds. But what if by switching this thing off, It also takes out the intake valves from opening at all? I HOPE is that by turnng off the ESE, it only impacts the fake speaker noises, which will improve the ML sound system output quality + aid in longevity of the speakers. At least on the BMW side, so many people are experiencing their front center speakers going bad because of this. I've turned this off on my previous M4, and my current M3.
I was going to test this for the LC yesterday when rain stopped, and as I tried to leave the house, it started raining again. I'm going to test this out today. Need to stop by the dealership and pick up some oil change supplies. I'll take it for a longer run and compare the behavior with ESE on off.
Thanks for you feedback!

I hear you. Some people don't like this at all. But I love it. I want to see if I can invite Rob (exhaust valve controller creator) to this forum and get him to chime in. If it is indeed valved, perhaps he can come up with a controller that controls both the intake & exhaust. This way for people who are similarly minded as you can just turn it off, or on without removing the sound pipe permenantly.

Just tested 30 minutes of driving with both noise cancellation & ESE turned off. i don’t know exactly what is happening here with the ESE, but these settings i have on the Carista app are real.
With both items turned off, you can hear the ambient air noise more. Also, the deep intake ‘grunt’ is gone. you can still hear it, but it’s quieter than i remember.
I will test it once more with the ESE turned on see. But i will most likely turn this off. If we find out that intake is valved, then i will investigate. solution for this.
One more thing: with both of these turned off, the ML sound system sound amazing!! i don’t think this is a placebo effect. Different music at different frequencies are much more clearer, especially at the volume levels 45 - 50. i also feel like the bass much tighter now too.

Just got back from testing the ESE feature. With the ESE turn off, things changed quite a bit. You can still hear the intake (still pretty good), but that raw, angry grunt during hard accelration is gone. Physical exhaust sound is still very good. I received a message from Rob (who is monitoring this thread). According to him,
I have played around with techstream which is the dealer software and did not see any ESE or ANC. I am 95% sure ANC is only on the convertibles. I am also fairly certain that ANC will only turn on with the top and windows both up. ESE may have not been on older models. I'll go back through and see if I can find it since I wasn't looking for it last time.
In my case, I will keep the ANC disabled. I feel that speakers / stereo sounds much better without it. And since this car will be driven mostly in the warmer months w/ top down, I don't see the need for this.
Regarding the valve opening for Exhaust: I'm not certain if the valves only and always open at a certain RPM. Based on what I'm hearing, It seems more dependent on your throttle % and rate. If you step on it, the valves open to give you the grunt you want. But if you press down the pedal at moderate acceleration, and even at a higher RPM, it doesn't sound as raw. I surmise that it could also be that the valves open at certain RPMS, but what is different is how the intake valves are opening up depending on throttle rate / load. So, I may be mistaking this for the exhaust valve sound. Because I don't have a throttle controller to create a controlled environment to test the intake valve theory, there really isn't anything else I can do at this point. Too many variables here.
So, until I have the ability to fully open the throttle and test for the intake valves, ill keep them both turned off for now. I only have the Carista app for another 3 weeks. I can always re-enable it for $9.00 / month. No biggie. But I hope someone with the valve controller can test this for us as this is as far as I can take it.

Finally, I was very pleased with the sound when downshifting with the paddles, which doesn't involve any intake noise. Sounds awesome, and that's all the noise I need myself, also when accelerating. Thank you guys.

Hey, would you mind going into detail what exactly you did? It'd be greatly appreciated. I'd like to remove as much as possible, BUT without any CELs, so I assume the electronic valve has to remain plugged, correct? And if you have any videos, please post links too. Thanks again in advance for your help.
You're correct that you can cruise without that intake noise, BUT it takes a lot less than I expected to open the darn valve, even in normal mode. And again, what I hated about that the most is that the noise goes from 0 to 100 all of a sudden, which sounds super fake. And annoying as well. So I'd absolutely get rid of that since day 1; the only question I have is how to approach that. Hopefully Bitkahuna will post details. And thank you for doing the testing you're doing . I'd like to keep ANC for a quieter ride when traveling, so hope somebody can post details which cars (coupes and/or convertibles) have it, and from which year. But I'd like to just remove 'ESE' (whatever it is), if possible without disabling ANC. Learning a lot from this thread, so keep it going. He he.

Then, download the Carista app. It's free to download and connect to your vehicle without paying any money. You have to pay $9.00 / month with auto renew if you want to program anything. But you can see what is possible without paying. If you decide to program such as seat belt chmes disable, external / internal lighting, and make the car remember various 'last settings' when you start up the car then you can pay it on the phone, and then immeidately cancel the auto renew. This is how I do it.
I am the only one that has tested this and posted the results here. Others may have tested it, but no one is posting / reporting. Some posted that they don't remember seeing this option on their cars. But we don't know if this is year / model specific option, or something that was always there for all models, and Carista has just recently enabled to coding of these features.
Only way to get to the bottom of it is for people to test it on their vehicle to see if they have the same feature. I hope others will join in and help us to better unerstand this. Otherwise, we'll just speculate to no end, or discuss the merits of having these features, or not, or rip everything out, etc.., Which is irrelevent for what we are trying to learn.
1. Is the sound tube separately valved
2. Does disablng the ESE also disables the valves, or simply kills the fake speaker noise
3. Is this feature only in the 24 models.
As I stated above, unless I have full control of the 'exhaust' valves, which I don't (valve controller doesn't work on 24s yet), this is as far as I can take it, unless someome else comes in here to add something constructive to what we are trying to 'understand'.

I don't own one yet, but probably will. Didn't quite like 24's, so for the first time, will consider a pristine used '23 (or even '22) coupe, with hardly any miles...but the challenge will be finding a 'touring' one, which seem like unicorns. Ha ha. Car is not perfect (none is), but it's the best overall for my needs. I considered the F-Type P450 RWD coupe, and C8 coupe 3LT with MRC. Anyway, when test-driving the LC, I just couldn't confirm one test, unfortunately, but maybe one of you could confirm it: How noisy is the cabin at 80 mph in normal mode. I could only take it to maybe 50, since it was rush hour in Austin. And it seemed definitely quieter than the P450, but about the same as the C8, surprisingly, since my previous 2 of the last 2 generations were super noisy (the new one is like day and night different in every regard). On a twisty road, I could confirm the handling is acceptable, something I didn't expect from a 4,300-lb behemoth. Ha ha. ML is on par with the other top stereo options, and the cabin noise probably one of the best, if not the best. And the paddles respond almost as quick as the C8's DCT, so perfectly acceptable. The P450 paddles are borderline acceptable, so I guess it doesn't have the latest ZF tranny, like new BMW M cars have, unfortunately. But I didn't find the sport seat lower bolsters comfortable, so it absolutely has to be a touring version. And don't want any gimmicks, so very happy the touring package doesn't have RWS or VGRS. I'd like the Torsen/Yamaha damper though, as well as HUD (ML, alcantara headliner, and semi-aniline front seats are included with touring). Will keep you guys posted.

i have no idea. if that info is obtained through obd2, and an app can capture that via obd2, then i don’t see why lu not.
i have only used this to diagnose, code & clear codes with various different apps for different cars. it wa been rock solid. Also, one of the most popular bluetooth ovd2 dongle.
