I'd rather do without Android Auto than have to eat Vegemite. In my book it's a good trade off!!

I know this sucks but there is a solution to a certain degree (I don't use Bluetooth speaker phone or messages, just spotify and waze, I use my phones speaker phone if I need to make a call which I seldom do), especially if you aren't willing to switch from Android to iOS.
1. Buy a cheap iPhone that supports carplay (iPhone 5 and up)
2. Set it up with what you need, I downloaded my spotify Playlist directly onto the phone (highest quality). In my case I used a older android phone. Disabled all the notifications from apps.
3. Turned on Hotspot on my main phone and setup the iOS device to use that Hotspot.
4. Tucked the phone away, in the armrest and left the power on. Turned off all features to conserve battery. Iphones are one of the best devices as they don't consume much battery when in sleep mode compared to androids.
that's it, every time I hop into the car, I turn on my Hotspot on my phone and the android phone (or iphone) sitting in the armrest picks up the wifi signal and I get what I need (traffic info). If I add songs to my spotify Playlist on my regular phone, I go into the android phone and download the Playlist again (using home wifi to save data).
