Default radio antenna frustration

well, the power antenna was broken when i bought the car so I attempted to install a new one. We took out the old one, took out the motor, took out all the broken pieces of the old one from the motor, reinstalled it correctly, then tried to put the new antenna in.

according to the instructions which came with the replacment antenna, I am supposed to turn the radio on, put the antenna belt into the antenna hole, and turn the radio off. the motor should turn and take the antenna belt inside. but, it wouldn't take it in more than a few inches. so we took out the motor, disassembled it, put the antenna belt in manually, and reattached it. now the antenna was in, but the motor would only raise and lower it by about 3 inches, no more. now i'm even worse off than before, because at least before i could manually put the antenna down if i needed to go through a car wash or something, but now it's permanently stuck in the up position.

anyone else had any problems like this? Maybe i'm just a terrible repairman. I accidently drilled a hole through my hood while attempted to install a new hood strut, but that's a different story :-)
