Running amps on OEM stereo
I've got a 1991 LS400 with the Pioneer system, no CD changer. I was curious to see if it made sense to upgrade and install an amp(s) to the system, or would it be a wast of money.
My sub wfr is blown so that had to get replaced but now I'm thinking of going a little more than that.
Any suggestions?

Hey,
I hope someone post a reply, because I have a very similar question. Does it make sense to upgrade with an "aftermarket" amp, sub and speakers WITHOUT changing the headunit??? I have a "new" 1993 LS 400 completely stock! David

i have a gs4...and for awhile, i ran the factory nakamichi sound, removed the factory sub, installed an amp w/ a high level to rca convertor. I loved the bass....
then when i had enough money i took out the factory stereo, installed a alpine head unit and did a custom sub install
if ur on a budget, adding an aftermarket amp & sub is the best way to go.

MY ADVICE IS TO SWITCH TO 1991 NAKAMICHI SYSTEM. THE NAKAMICHI HEADUNIT,. NAKAMICHI AMP AND MANAKMICHI SUBWOOFER PLUG RIGHT IN AND BOLT RIGHT INTO SAME WQRING AND SAME BRACXKETS AS THE PIONEER. SO THEN YOU COULD ADD A LEXUS CD CHANGER TO THE NAK HEAD UNIT AND UPGRADE YOUR WHOLE CAR . ALSO IT IS A JOB ANY OWNER COULD DO. IT DOES NOT REQ

I've got a project in the works to do the whole amp upgrade and keep the tape player. You know cassette technology has made great advancements since the early 90s.
I've got a sony professional cassette recorder hooked up to my home stereo and I can make some kickass mix tapes. The sound quality is awesome as long as I keep the head clean. There is some fluctuation in pitch over larger potholes, though.
Also, be sure not to use tapes longer than 90min in length - they use thinner tape in order to fit it all on the roll.
I'd like to switch to the nak headunit, too, but there are a lot of other things I would rather have for $500.
I'm going with 1 5-channel amp to drive the whole system. IMO 2 amps is overkill for a stock headunit without CD.

Well I decided to go with a head unit replacement. I'm going with Premier CD receiver unit, 1000 watt amp, JL Audio subwoofer (8 inch). Keeping the stock speakers for now to see how they will sound. If necessary the speakers will go.
What do you guys think?
