Default What's a good amp for a 12 inch PPI sub.

I was told that the ppi subs can handle a very high range unlike subs like the jl. the ppi's being able to hit high and low. do i need a amp that has a very high frequency range too? a bit confused. thanks

When you say "high range" do mean in regards to frequency?? Personally I would feed a subwoofer nothing higher than 100MHz; and probably more like 80MHz. The rest of the frequency range is covered by the tweeters and midranges and/or mid-bass speakers.

As for power handling, JL severely underrates their subs. Meaning that they can take more power than they list. Some people buy 2 channel amps and bridge them for their subs. Others buy dedicated subwoofer amplifiers. It's all up to you and how much $$ you want to spend.

Hope this helped a bit,

PPI, at least the older ones like the one I have, are excellent from 20-20k. That's what I used on my subs, but you don't really need that kind of amp. I think Zapco would make an excellent sub amp because of their very high damping #s. I'm not familiar with JL's amps at all. I'm sure some others will chime in.

i know the mids and highs are good but don't you want some clear bass to go with the highs? jls hit hard down low but can they handle highs like the ppis?

I currently have JL Audio's VR component sets in my Civic. These aren't even the top of the line XR's !!! It sounds amazing; great midrange, and clear smooth highs from the tweeters. And as for clear bass, JL's are not just for the SPL crowd. I have had many subs, and to me the JL's are the "most musical". You just have to get the box built for sound quality.

I thought he said he was looking for a sub amp? If that's the case he doesn't need to worry about anything over 80 Hz. If I'm looking for a full range amp, I'd pick McIntosh, but since he's looking for a sub amp, you need damping and juice, which is easier to find.
