hey all, we had an interesting issue occur yesterday at the drift event down in houston. The speakers no longer work. The amp works just fine, but nothing is coming out of the front or rear speakers. However, the wierd thing is that there is like an electronic zapping noise that comes out of them all the time, both with the radio on and off AND with the car off. It is just a random buzzzzzPOP sound that happens every couple of seconds at random. The only way we could get it to stop doing that was to pull the fuse for the radio.
I am not so good at troubleshooting stereo problems, so does anyone know where i should start with this one?

That happened to me after I went through a car wash. I took apart the trunk stuff, and below the cd changer was a couple inches of water that got the factory amp wet. It later dried out and started working again.

On my 92 SC300, sometimes there are buzzing and popping sounds coming out of the speakers. Turning off the radio and engine doesn't stop it. When it happens while driving, the noises intensify with engine RPM. Suggestions?

99.9% confidence: you have created a poor ground loop. you need a better ground connection. make sure your ground point is to chass metal, not to paint. The sound you hear is the alternator whine through the amp.
check the quality of your ground wire first, then check your ground point. make sure the surface is to bare metal screw.
you do NOT have to run your ground back to the battery. this will add noise to the line. Finding a short location from the amp is your best ground point. Also you can add some fitering on your positve line if this doesn't work

Thanks amul. I'll look into it. I'm not the driver of the car, and I guess my (second hand) info was slightly off. The buzzes and pops are an occasional problem, and they continue after turning off the car. But there is an alternator whine too. So I'll check into the ground and maybe add a ground wire at the amp.
The buzz and pop might be a speaker? But why would it continue when the car is off?
