I've done a lot of research on replacing the stock sub with a higher quality free-air subwoofer and went ahead and found a JL Audio 10IB4 a few months back. This seemed to be the consensus choice for this application and everyone said the same thing. "Use the stock bracket and it will drop right in". Well, I did that and my sub hits the gas tank! Here is what I did.
Removed stock sub assembly and removed the top and bottom plastic pieces from the metal bracket. I then placed the bracket back on the rear deck and tried to fit the 10IB4 into place. It is about 5/8" to tall. Am I missing something? If this sub fits for everyone else then why doesn't it fit in my car? BTW, my car is a 1992 and came with the standard Pioneer system with no CD and an 8" sub. I upgraded the headunit to a Kenwood headunit, Kenwood 5 1/4" components up front, Sony 5 1/4" coax in the rear, Sony XM-475GSX 4x75w amp. 2 channels are bridged to power the sub and 2 channels power the 4 speakers.
Can anyone help me figure this out???

Yeah use MDF or some material like that commonly found at Home Depot. It will raise the sub the required 5/8" and should also still fit under your third rear light cover grill if you have it set up like that.
