Default Radio Automatic Sound Level

I have an 04 LS Premium and have a question about the ASL feature. I don'r really hear any difference between the sound level of the radio with the sunroof and windows open from a stop or at speed when the ASL feature is on. I asked the dealer about it but they said there was no problem. Just wondering if they are all like this or can you notice any difference.

I've always been under the impression that the ASL feature in all Lexus vehicles is readily noticeable only whenever you turn on your audio (CD, tape or radio) after you start the car. The sound level stays the same when you come to a stop. I hope someone here can confirm that observation.

The BMW 7-series has a nice ASL-like feature where the sound level gradually reduces when you slow down to a stop.

I have an 01 Ultra and the ASL when turned on does lower the sound when I slow down to a stop and increases back to normal when I take off again. You have to manually turn it on in the audio menu.

I must be oblivious or a moron (or both)...but what the heck is ASL, how do I use it and when or when not would I want it? I have an '04 and had an '03 before that.

OK all ASL does work but it is subtle. When driving on the highway at speed and playing music at a normal level turn on and off the ASL. You should clearly hear a difference if you have good ears. Because of the road noise the ASL turn up the volume slightly and adjust some sort of very simple DSP EQ.

I have noticed on my loaner RX330 you can adjust how much the ASL comes into play. I don't know if it work that way on the LS430. On my LS400 its either on or off. I like it.

I hate the ASL type feature on my Moms Mercedes CLK320 Convertible. Its a huge pain in the but. Just driving around town at slow speeds to radio is continuously going up and down. I have the top up and am driving around with my Mom try to talk and the stupid radio keeps going up and down. The Lexus ASL works just fine.

ASL stands for Automatic Sound Leveling. Found on the stock Pioneer systems, but not Nakamichi. Uses a small microphone to sense ambient noise and adjusts sound level to compensate. Some systems are better than others, depending on the implementation.
