Changing Out the Stock Speakers IS 300
Wanting t change out the factory speakers in my IS 300, already have JL Audio 12w3d4's in the trunk with the JL Audio 500/1 and I already have a 5 channel amp to power the new aftermarket speakers, just need to know the size for the doors/components & the rear deck. Also looking to see if anyone knows if I'll need some goofy code to get my head unit working again once I swap em out, because I am gonna leave the factory head unit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!!! - Jenn

keep in mind that the stock rear speakers (6x9) are actually two speakers on each side. the stock amp splits the frequencies into a high pass (you can't see the wires from the trunk) and a low pass channel for the woofer. if you want to change our your speakers and keep the stock head unit i see a few options:
1. modify the stock amp.
to do this you will need to take it out and perform the "pre amp outs" mod.. you can find this on is300.net
then connect those outputs to a new xx channel amp and use it to power the new speakers. (xx because it
depends on the total number of speakers you are planning)
2. use the stock amp to power the speakers
with this option you are sort of stuck with a few things to think about. first: the stock amp is weak. what
speakers are you planning on buying? if they require a lot of power the amp will not do it. secondly: do
you want to only hear bass in the rear, or only mid and high frequencies? if you use the stock amp for the
rear speakers you will have to make this choice.
edit: i'm dumb. i should read more carefully before posting, but i don't want to get rid of this information. to answer your real question, the headunit should work just as normal (though i'm not sure fading/balancing will work anymore), since i'm assuming you will be using some sort of line level converter or stock amp mod to get the input for your amp.
