I have a yellow (or red, too lazy to check right now) top battery and the car worked fine, but when I had to go to work a couple hours later, everything was dead. The car is still dead. I bought this battery about a 1.5 - 2 years ago and it seems that the life of it is pretty short.

Is that lifespan normal?

I had a red top on my other car. it lasted me 2 years with a 400 watt rms amp and a capacitor.

i left the lights on and drained the battery after that it was no good anymore. tried charging but had no luck.

Waste of money i think.

Big difference between Yellow and Red top. Red top not meant for deep cycling, you need Yellow if you're going to drain it much. Lifespan of red indeterminate if deep cycled, as little protection is provided against internal damage when battery is run down. Yellow has different internal topology to protect it and allow it to be deep cycled many times.
