XM antenna
When I bought my Roady I put the XM antenna outside by the spoiler on my RX300. I few months ago. I mounted my Roday into the overhead sunglasses case. While i was doing the wiring. I placed the antenna on the dash. It works just fine there. So I put some velcro on it. And mounted it all the way forward in the center on the dash. I still get drop outs of the signal. But they are at the same places that I got them when it was outside.

MIne is in the center the rear panel, right behind the subwoofer in my GS 430. I get an occassional cut out when driving south, but not enough to get me to mount it outside.

Ripoff???
It is VERY unlikely that anyone would rip out a satellite antenna. As long as the connectors on the other end are inside the car, you cannot rip the antenna off of the roof and rip or cut the wires without causing a lot of technical repair work which is 1) time-consuming, and 2) not easily done by non-technical folks - it's not like repairing the power cord on your lamp. These antennas can be bought new for $30-75, it's just not worth the time and effort, unless you plate the damn thing in diamonds.
You can put it under your rear glass (inside the car) as long as you don't have any metallization on your windows, as the other posts indicate. You may compromise some of your reception at certain angles during some of the day, but this depends on your car's orientation vs. satellite (source) transponder location.

I haven't had any car wash probs in 2 1/2 years of roof-mounted antenna (I go thru car washes in the winter time only.) I think it's stuck on too well to just be ripped off by a car wash, but you're right in principle, if it's inside the car, it can't be torn off.
