Best aftermarket navigation system(s)?
so what is it guys? i'm going nuts looking for a GS with navigation, can't seem to find it in anything i like- so if it comes down to it, i'll bite the bullet and get an aftermarket navigation system. what are the best brands, and what kind of prices am i gonna be looking at, with and without installation? i heard alpine is good, just not sure which models. also, i assume DVD navigation is better than harddrive navigation, only because its easier and cheaper to upgrade the system- am i right to assume this?
hope this isn't a repost, by the way, did a search and found nothing..

my opinion on one
pioneer really let me down, my nav unit took a crap on me a few weeks ago, and maybe a year old if not a tad older. i am thinking hard and maybe getting the eclipse nav. pioneer has some of the best software, and overall nav unit, but it dissapointed me greatly.

avic 90 i think,
all those numbers are a pain to keep up with, n i have not actually looked to double check since the thread was made. it makes me mad i spend that much money n it won't last longer than a year. and i call pioneer and they kinda just blow it off. eclipse is totally different imo, my 7001 was broken by a car stereo installer, and they fixed it and sent it back to me fairly quick n it was upgraded into the 7002, which had better bass control, and more features. makes me wonder why i left the eclipse line, ooh yeah cause they didn't sell em.

It also has a G-Force sensor that reads off your G-forces when you accelerate, deaccelerate, and turn. It has a built in compass and a volt meter as well.
Definitely some pimp stuff.
I may be a little biased though...

Mine: $1,000 plus my old Alpine CVA 1005. I'd probably put a value of $400 on the CVA at the time (6 months ago).
The Avic plays mp3s and will let you sort through folders. It has XM radio and an automatic dimmer for the screen that adjusts to ambient light conditions accordingly. It's a touch screen too (for those of you who don't know). Although when it flips up - it covers the temp controls, it still allows you to adjust the side rocker buttons for individual temperatures.
There's someone selling one in the audio/video of the classified section. I think he wants $1,350 - definitely a good deal if you're looking to upgrade.

$2k is definitely a lot. Did you check out the one in the CL classifieds?
Here's one for $1375
And there is no monthly fee for nav service. The system also looks up all kinds of points of interest. I didn't think it could help me one day but it did- I was looking for a local Department of Motor Vehicles and I was within a mile but didn't know where it was...
I popped in the DVD (the nav system is dvd based) and it found the DMV for me within a minute and gave me directions.
I'd be really interested in seeing if they come out with updated DVDs but I don't see them taking on that kind of development task for another year or two if ever.
Here's another photo of the unit. I know - it sucks but the Treo600 only has 640x480 resolution.
Left gauge: acceleration g-forces (right of center) and deacceleration g-forces (left of center)
Middle gauge: speed of vehicle
Right gauge: side to side acceleration g-forces.
Very cool stuff. I had it pinned when I did this:
weeeeeeeeeee!
