ASL = auto sound leveling I believe. has to do with making the radio louder at speed and quieter when going slow.

It acts like a compressor (audio) that gets feedback and compensates for external noise so that you don't have to play with the volume and settings yourself when noise level changes. It is not perfect but it kind of works.

And Rock, one of your GFs?

Default stereo

Yah.. am single... hehehehehehe. Hey, I just looked at the radio.. and the plugs are diferent.. I think I posted the question some time ago and was told that it will work. Just need to get the plugs from another lexus.. maybe from the dealer? I know I would need the ones that come out of the car.. But, even if I do get the plugs.. is everything really going to work right???

the 98 radio has a 10 pin 6 pin radio plug. the 2001 has a 20 pin . it wont plug in without an 16 pin to 20 pin adapter. the 2001 is nicer because it has rds and the new control boxes that add xm radio will read out the stations on the lcde. the 98 wont do that.

yes it can be done with the radio plug from a 2001 and a 10 and 6 pin adapter plugs for the 98 and the 98 and a 2001 wiring diagrams. you just have to match up the wires just like putting in an aftermarket radsio except the 2001 headunit will be recognized by the amp unlike an aftermarket radio. . those adapters are available commercially. so you dont have to cut up the factory harness in case you wanted to go back to original ever. . the 2001 has many mprovements and sounds better than the 98 radio . i know several 98 ownersa who have done it. right now i am trying to retrofit the 2001 gs radio in the 98 gs with navigation so it can have the text ability on xm radio. the plugs on the navigation 2001 radio also changed.

Default Yayyyyyyy

Hehehehehe, I knew there was a way. Can ya help me to get a place to buy the adapters plugs??? Please? So all I gotta do is buy the plugs from say a wrecked GS or dealer??? Then get the plugs that go to the 98? that will fit into the 2001 plugs? Sounds simple but I am a bit confused...

you need a 20 pin toyota radio plug. the plug that plugs in the radio. they cost 12.95 on ebay. just put 20 pin toyota in the seaCH. THEN YOU NEED THE 10 PIN 6 PIN TOYOTA speaker adapter plugs. 7.19 at autotoys. just go on ggogle and put toyota adfapter speaker to find autoitoys. so for 30 dollars plus shipping you will have the 2 adapters YOU NEED. . saLVAGE YARDS THINK YOU ASKING TO CUT OFF THERE FINGERS IF YOU ASK FOR THE PIGTAIL TO A 2001 LESXUS RADIO. THEY NEVER SELL A WHOLE HARNESS BUT WILL TELL YOU THEY DONT CUT THEM . I GUESS THEY CRUSH THE CARS WITH EVERY CONNECTOR INTACT IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE. ................................. THEN YOU MAKE A Y SHAPED ADAPTER CABLE. WITH THE 20 PIN RADIO PLUGGED IN THE NEW RADIO AND AND THE SPEALKER ADAPTERS PLUGGED INTO THE 2 RADIO PLUGS YOU PULLED OUT OF THE 98 RADIO. THEN YOU SPLICE ALL THE LIKE WIRES TOGETHER. B+, GRD, ACC .THE R AND L. THE TX+TXM AVCX LAN COMMUNICATION WIRES. YOU NEEDE A WIRINGT DIAGRAM OF BOTH YEARS TO SPLICE THE RIGHT WIRES TOGETHER. THIS IS WIRING 101 AT A STEREO SHOP.

Default pioneer

Ok, Just found the adapters... Whgere can I obtain the wiring diagram? Sounds pretty straight forward. And everything will work as it is intended on the new stereo right? ie. the added features of RDS, TRAF, and TYPE...? This is what the radio looks like.... I want to use.

YES ALL THE FEATURES WILL WORK. THE 2001 AMPLIFIER IS THE SAME AS 1998 EXACTLY SO ALL THE DIFFERENCES IS IN THE HEADUNIT. there are dealers that sell lexus cars. and they have all the electrical wiring books. also you can color print them off of toyota tis website for 10.00 for 24 hours use.
