New door speakers versus subwoofer

New door speakers versus subwoofer
Hey guys. For the last several months, I've been at war with the Lexus "Premium" system in my 98 GS400. I put quotes around "Premium" because it's a bit of a misnomer if you ask me. Anyway, I tried swapping out the door speakers and installed Boston Acoustics 6.5" (not the pro series) and the improvement in sound was slight (at most) so I took them out and went back to stock. Would I be better off going the route of adding a subwoofer to the trunk? I am looking for clarity and more fullness and perhaps if I take the bass out of the door speakers, which should allow those speakers to focus on mids and highs, I will get the clarity I am looking for out of the front speakers and the fullness I am looking for from the trunk. Does this sound logical? And, if I decide to go that route, I would prefer to add a free-air sub to the existing hole rather than a box-type setup. I am relatively ignorant when it comes to car stereo stuff, so go easy on me (please). Thanks for any help.

Well I think the reason why those Bostons didn't sound good was because they need a lot power than the OEM amp could fork out. You should consider getting yourself an aftermarket amp to power them up.

The thing that will give you fullness and clarity is a nice set of components up front. Get the front stage to your liking and THEN add a subwoofer. So......go back and get a nice set of front component speakers w/ a solid amp to power them.
