Default GS4 w/NAV - Replace stereo only?

I don't think I have seen this asked in this way in my searching on this topic. On a GS with Navigation, the stereo is integrated with the Nav system. Below the Nav display is a seperate unit with the primary controls for the stereo (power / tuning ***** and buttons). The Nav display provides some additional controls for the stereo.

Would it be possible to remove the lower control unit with the ***** completely, which would make the audio controls non-functional through the Nav, but still keep the rest of the Nav functions operational. Or does this lower control unit have important electronics for the Nav display functionality?

My thinking is that if I can put a new head unit in that lower portion, all my controls would be right there. I don't really care if I can control it via the Nav display as long as I have control from that general location and the navigation, climate and other functions still work. With a whole new head unit I can get better integration for satellite radio and other things.

Anyone try this or know the answer?

I believe the screen and the radio part is all one piece so you can't seperate them.

they are not 1 piece but the avc lan communication system makes it difficult to getr the screen to function unless its communicating with the radio.

Default GS4 w/NAV - Replace stereo only?

i have the exact same issue with my 99 GS400. I want to take the head unit out, but keep the nav system. How can I do this? And where is the best place to learn more? Local stereo guys were clueless and I'm not ready to be their test rat.

any suggestions are welcomed.

you can put in a climate control unite and replace the whole unit thats the only way the stock navigation would not be able to funtion at all.. i do have the climate control if needed in exchange for your lower portion of your nav unit

the nav and tape deck is two separate pieces... separate the two units... place the tape/volume portion under the seat with two wires running to it.

OK, so the nav and tape deck can be seperated. cool, I can do that. Will I need a bracket? Where can I find one? I searched everywhere and couldn't find anything. Thanks.

BTW, what did you mean by putting the unit under the seat? why?

you still need to run two wires to it in order to still have voice for the navigation and it fits right under the seat.
