Default Aftermarket Navigation......Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood?? HELP

I really need nav in my car for my job and cant figure out which one to get.

First of all I am looking to pay around $2000 after installation.
And want a double din unit that sits in the dash and does not slide out and pop up

I have looked at Pioneer, Alpine and Kenwood.

The Pioneer AVIC-D1 seems like a great choice, but the only problem is the fact that you can't modify anything while you are driving.
It also does not play DVDs
However it is an all in one system that will control the radio and and provide nav for $1200

I'm somewhat confused about the Alpine system, but it seems like you have to buy the Nav unit, DVD player, Screen and a receiver to control the sound system as all separate parts.
I saw the new 6.5" in screen, as opposed to the 5.8", but can't tell if it is just for headrest mounting.

I would like some opinions on the best systems and the best way to do this, and comments if any of you have aftermarket nav

Overall I am looking to do:
Touch Screen NAV, in the double din slot (6.5" screen)
Control Premium Sound System
Possibly play DVDs/ TV Tuner
XM Radio
IPOD Connector

Look into the Eclipse AVN-5435. It is made by Fujitsu Ten, which makes some of the newer Nav for Lexus. It can play DVDs but you will have to sacrifice Nav because the Nav is also DVD based. Only one can be functional at a time.

Default Eclipse AVN5435

I had this installed about 3 weeks ago and I have to say this is awesome.
It sits like a factory unit and it has playback for DVD/RW/CD/RW.

The Navigation is great too! It gives you three route options as well as a split screen option.
1) Full Screen
2) Street Names and When and Where to make turns.
3) Just arrows
4) Zoomed Map

I would get this unit as it cost me $2100 + Installation w/Eclipse Wires.

so both around $1500 in CC and Best Buy for the D1, and Best Buy is running free installation

thoughts?

and by CC, I meant Circuit City

so do I trust CC or BB, $200 installls, and life time guarantees...

the other thing I could do is get it for a lot less on ebay, and BB will still install...

this local spot wants $1200 installed cash

or if I buy, both circuit city and best buy and probably this guy will change $225

question is, who to trust, or is it an easy enough install

$1200 installed is unheard of. The D1 unit costs $1180 at the cheapest site online shipped. I think the cheapest I will be able to get mine installed with the unit, mp3 unit, nav system, rear camera and sub and amp will be about $500.

I don't want to go with the Alpine, seems like it is going to cost about $2500 for all the components.
The new eclipse w/ the 30gb hard drive seems like a good unit, but I don't know how flexible it is in terms of addons, and it is also $2000 for the unit.

Looks like I am going to have to do with the Pioneer and not being able to use it while I drive.
I am guessing the TV Tuner add-on and a DVD player add-on won't be able to work during driving either.

actually it is not unreasonable, they get it wholesale, and install is easy for them

(how do I check if refurbished? guess I have to ask to see before installed (although they don't carry them, and it takes a day for them to get it, so doesn't that ahve to be new?)

I guess 1200 for me is the way to go

ya, on eclipse, the whole hassle of having to swap dvd to see it, and then not have navigation, and it being that much more expensive, might put it out of contention for me, my choice is really dash mount navigation for over $500, or just get it nice and clean, D1

I just put in the Pioneer AVIC-D1 and I installed a DVD player in the glove box where the stock changer goes.
I was looking into the Eclipse and the Pioneer before I made my decision because those were the only 2 that seemed to be worth my money at the time. Since then I have heard some good things about the alpine also but Im quite happy with my choice.
The unit does not play DVD's as it stands alone but a simple DVD player is quite cheap to install and works flawless while your Nav is working. If installed properly you can watch the DVD while also watching your nav with split screen.
Its true that you cant enter in addresses while driving but you can access your address book so if addresses are already saved there than you will have no problem. If not, well... honestly... it sucks to pull over!
The D1 also has the IB-100 ipod connector so that your ipod can charge and connect to your D1 at the same time. WHile connected you can view artist name, song title, etc right on your D1 screen.
I wont bash the eclipse or the alpine because theyr great units too but I felt the D1 was the best way to go.
