LS400 Power Seat Malfuntioning!

LS400 Power Seat Malfuntioning!
Hi, i have a 92 LS400 with the power seat problem described here:

Anyway, here's a picture of the whole seat opened up:

The arrow is pointing to the problem area. Here's a closer picture of that area:

that black rod in the picture is turned by a motor on the other side of the seat. The rod is supposed to fit into a "splined shaft" on the other side (circled picture 2), which turns the shaft and raises/lowers the seat. I've tried to slide the rod more towards the right (center console side) of the seat, but its not really budging.
What tool(s) have you used to get the rod of fit over the shaft?
Also, for reference, he's a pic of the motor on the left (door side) of the seat:
