Hi,

I am in the process of replacing my mids and highs with the DynAudios and wanted to know what differences I would notice between the freeair JL Audio 10IB4 and 12IB4? Deeper? Tighter? At this time I did not want to go with the sealed enclosure since I value my trunk space.

I will be using an Alpine MRD-F752 (75x4, 250x1) as the power source. I do not play my music real loud and am looking for clean, tight bass that would complement the Dyns.

Thanks,

Thumbs up 10"

GSMan - If ya want tight & responsive bass ( like in jazz ), then the 10" would be better. The 12" works OK but will yield a lower frequency response ( better suited for bass heavy stuff ). In fact, I shut down my 12's for everyday listening & use just the 8" midbasses in the rear doors for the lower frequencies.

We were looking for thet LOW LOW frequency response and 2x12s worked great. I do agree that it depends on what you like.

I just installed the MRD 752 and i hooked up the JL Powerwedge box with 2x10" W0s. Not the subwoofer solution i originally planned, but it turned out very nice. very tight and clean. i had wanted to do a suspended 12" box below the rear deck but the JL box turned out well (and alot simpler). it fits in the rear shelf area perfectly.

12 sub is much lowder due to a bigger cone area of the speaker. 12" can be as fast and precise as any 10". You gotta make sure that you have a good sealed box and you need to give the sub a lot of power. This will make it easier for the sub to compress the air inside the box and your base can be easily tuned and adjusted to whatever you want.

Thumbs up Under Certain Circumstances

The debate over 10" vs 12" vs 15" will rage on forever, it seems. I really think it comes down to your taste in music, budget & how much space R U willing to sacrifice? I'll agree with Retro up to a point - a 12" CAN be as fast & precise as a 10" but it depends on the design of each. IME, it takes a 12" designed for SQ to be equal with a 10" designed for SPL & having correct power & enclosures for each. The SQ 12" will have a the same size magnet ( or close to ) as a SPL 10" so, although it has the larger cone area, the lighter 12's magnet will respond as quickly as the heavier 10" magnet. Case in point - when I changed out my RF Power DVC 12's for HX2's, the lighter magnets of the HX2's responded faster & tightened up the bass response ( removed the dip on the RTA sweep at 28 Hz as well ). Nice byproduct was a small increase in SPL as the DVC's are current hogs!!
