Navigation: DVD Update
#32
Well, I was joking on the DD and Director's commentary, but I'll be a son of a bee. Well, then no we can't copy it. I really just want the DVD, and I'm glad to pay for it, but the dealer response for people who 1. Have Nav 2. Know it can be updated 3. Inquire about updating 4. Willing to purchase update. . .is a small amount.

OK. I finally spent about an hour at Lexus dealer tried 2002 Nav DVD on my 2001 GS: No Luck :-(
The Nav computer contains all the program such as Menu options and soft button definition, there for, the new DVD database and information links to the new soft buttons are not function properly. So, the only way to update the system is to wait for the official release of updated version of DVD, which most likely will contain the flash program update to the Nav computer itself and new database. I spoke to one of the Sr. Tech, he indicats that Lexus will require the Dealer to performe such Flash ROM update for customer, that means the dealer will have some additional income called "labor" charge in additional the cost of DVD disc. Dealer estimate the total cost of update would be around $200 to $250. No official date is set for the release of update, Lexus only said will be sometime of November.
Thanks for MMM's information about DVD9 issue. It is true the Lexus Nav DVD is indeed a single side, dual layer disc. Therefore, to copy it is impossible since there is no consumer DVD+RW and blank meadia available for DVD9 format.
All in all, it is worth the try.
So now all we can do is wait.............

He also said that CD upgrade for 2001 models is not free anymore. Any information on that?

Say what you want about Bill Gates, but when he says product X will be on the shelves by MM/DD/YY, it is there THEN. And he tells us this months in advance.
All I'm saying is don't hold Microsoft up as a shining example of the right way to develop software.
Perhaps a better example is Blizzard Entertainment. StarCraft was supposed to ship for the Christmas shopping season, but it wasn't ready. Instead of shipping a buggy product just so they could say they met their ship date, they continued to work on the product and make it right. The actual release came the following spring. Judging by the over 1 million copies of the game that have been sold thus far, it was worth the wait.
Personally, given the choice between an on-time release that's full of errors and compromises, or a delayed release that's done right, I'll wait for the correctly done version.
But that's just my opinion.

No comment on the Microsoft issue.
I have a big problem with Lexus' insousiance on this issue. My first email to them was answered with:
"Thank you for contacting Lexus Customer Satisfaction. The newest Navigation System update will be available this fall. At which point, you can contact your local Lexus dealer and have the update performed"
Notice the word "point" for a three-month time window. I sent two follow-up emails asking for a more precise time so I wouldn't have to call my dealer every week. Neither was answered.
In my mind, ignoring a customer's request is about as bad as it gets. It looks like the passionate pursuit of perfection lost its way.
