I have the new DVD based NAV.
For the first two month after I got the car I had no map DVD (because the Swedish maps were not finished). Still, all the other menus (cd/radio, climate, etc) worked fine. So I'm pretty sure that they are stored somewhere else and have little or nothing to do with the navigation.
When I finally got the DVD with the maps I put it into my computer and started analyzing the files. The only thing I could conclude was that the NAV uses an operating system called TRON (The Real Time Operating System Nucleus). I tried to find an emulator/debugger/assembler for TRON but the only one I found was commercial and very expensive.

The shop that does all of my work knows how to do it. These guys are really good; 9 cars in the IASCA lanes this year, most of their cars have won every regional attended. Responsible for the amateur Mercedes that attended the Wild Wild West shootout in AZ to compete against the experts - Steve Brown (Alpine BMW M3), Will Adcock (Reaper II), and Gary Biggs (Kicker Regal).
Call Sounds Impossible in NJ 732 291 8808, ask for Bill (owner), he has the info you seek.
