Default Passport 8500 X50 1,500 mile review

Well the old man and I just drove from Delaware to Atlanta on tuesday and back again on thursday. I picked up a Passport 8500 X50 blue led for him and his 04 MDX right before we left. I know, some of you guys are telling me that I should have bought a V1, but I didnt have the time, it was a "leave right now" kind of thing. I myself would have preferred getting a V1, but I decided to try the Passport.

Anyways, the Passport saved our *** two times on the way down. And alerted us on several other occasions we weren't speeding. BUT IT DID NOT alert us very well on one occasion. Two times it alerted us of Ka band while driving up a hill.

1st Hill- the first alert went off about a good 8-10 seconds(driving 80mph) then steady warnings till we got to the top of the hill, then a full blast warning, smokey sitting in the median about 300 yds in front of us. Plenty of time for us to get below 70mph

2nd Hill- Pretty much the same as above, same speed, same Ka band. Except the cop was on the right shoulder.

The one time it DID NOT alert us in time was probably about 6000ft before we passed him. We got 2 Ka Beeps, about 2 seconds apart, Im guessing he may have been using "instant-on". There were a couple of cars in front of us, and im guessing our radar detectore picked up the instant-on being shot at the cars in front. By the time we saw the cop, we drove right bye. Im wondering if V1 would have picked this up. This was on a straight away, no inclines or declines of road elevation. Thankfully no ticket, speed limit 65mph, our speed 74mph.

Regardless I thought the Passport did a fine job for our 1,500 mile trip. Just thought I would share if anyone was still in between the V1 and the 8500.

I will say this though, I will be getting a V1 later just to see which is better, Ill keep you guys posted

Thanks for the feedback on the Passport . I have been thinking about getting one of those. I will be interested to hear about your comparison with the V1.

I would say he was using instant-one for those times. I have only been busted once in 3 years with my 8500 and the cop that got me was using instant on.

I give mine a big . I will get a V-1 next to see how much difference it makes.

You can also get blinders to protect you from those instant-on radars. I forgot the site that was selling it. Morris just installed it on his car. Maybe he'll chime in on how good it works. From what i was reading, V1 & the blinders is the ultimate in protection from speeding tickets. Whole combo cost about $900-1000. Not having insurance premiums & going to court, priceless.

I own both the New X50 blue LED and and slightly older Valentine V1. The X50 for about 18 months, and the V1 for about 6. I use to never think the arrows would make much difference, but the difference is the rear arrows. Twice I had 2 Ka alerts about 1-2 miles following me from behind. Knowing that to me made a world of difference. Front alerts where close in range to the x50, V1 slightly better.

The V1 definitely without a doubt picks up more K and or X band than the X50. my X is off, but where the X50 picks up 1 K band say at a Walgreens, the V1 picks up both the entrances, other at the liqour store.

I haven't switched back to the X50 since

opposite here....had the X50 sold it to get a brand new V1....X50 picked up X and K a lot further away than the V1...no question....even my wife noticed this.

AUTOMUTE is a great feature on the X50....
ARROWS are a great feature on the V1....

SO ANYONE WANT TO SELL ME THEIR CRAPPY X50's???? red or blue???

Weird, was your X50 the first version, or the updated longer range 1? The V1 I am using is atleast a 3 yr old model, but performs very well.
You might be right about the range part on the X and K, but the multiple bogey counts never added to the V1. Thats where I think the X50 performed weaker.
