Exclamation

Greetings all! If you were to replace a blown speaker, would you get the OEM one from Lexus?

My rear pass. speaker blew in my 93 sc400 and I had it replaced. When I isolate just that speaker, it sounds horrible (compared to the driver side rear one, identical size). What gives?

Lexus told me that their speakers are designed specifically for the car.

Crutchfield told me the same thing.

The place that did the install never told me the above info. but I'm seeing first hand that this is probably the case.

Any thoughts?

Thumbs down OEM's

Jeff - Never worked on an SC but I figure it a similar setup to those in the GS models. The GS used older model Pioneer full range drivers - YUCK!! Probably what U're noticing is the difference in power going to the two different speakers. I believe the factory speakers are 2 ohm & I'd wager that whatever U had installed in place of the blown one is at least a 4 ohm or maybe an 8 ohm. If so, then the new speaker's only getting between 1/2 to 1/4 the power that the factory 2 ohm job has driving it ( Ohm's Law ). I also can't believe that Crutchfield didn't advise ya to swap both speakers - that's usually the FIRST improvement that they advocate in their catalogs!! Seems like U might need one of two things: either another OEM style speaker ( read; 2 ohm impedance ) that will drop in or swap the other unblown speaker for the replacement's twin & then get an amp. This will obviously cost more but yields the biggest improvement in sound quality. What speaker do U use to replace the blown one ( make, model & size )?
