And how does that work? Does it only open when you are in the vicinity i.e. the car key is in your pocket?

In other words does it work in a similar fashion to the way systems like this work on the new IS for example?

If you want to just walk up to the car for unlock and have a start button, I would consider using an RFID or prox card system.

Using RFID would give you a few feet distance. Probably what the newer cars are using. Prox cards need to be inches or right on the reader.

Wire in a couple relays this would be very possible. Why just add a start button if you need to use your key in the ignition anyway? That takes me back to my '76 BMW Bavaria.

Good luck

Cool, thanks!

Default Okay, ideas

Here are some items you could use. Hope your good with hacks....

Keyfob:
http://www.secureorderprocess.com/ti...?product_id=47

Reader:
http://www.ti.com/rfid/docs/products...STU-MRD1.shtml

So, basically what you need to do is:

1. Wire in the reader with the appropriate circuitry (this is the tough part. you may need to program a 'basic stamp' for this) See here: http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksea...+stamp&site=us

- you basically need the logic to:
a) when it sees a recognized card, unlock door... which doors?
b) when a above is done, activate the ignition circuitry
c) on push button start do xxx

I would estimate parts prices to be under $500.

Awesome! Now all I need to do is find someone qualified to do this for me. Does anyone know of any electronics shop that does stuff like this?

I will not even bother attempting to do this myself. The most complicated DIY job I can do is an intake install and changing bulbs.

You should do it then, probably could make some bucks from an RFID keyless aftermarket kit.

Why would the battery be dead though?

Current draw in active mode for the RFID receiver is only 100mA in active mode. In passive it is only 5mA. That is less than an alarm LED.

You could always use an alarm keyfob to 'disarm' your alarm and put the RFID into active mode.

I think we are going off topic with the RFID stuff. Maybe that should go in a new post. Back to the ignition stuff hameed get a button and look up the instruction on how they handle the remote start so you know which ignition wires to tap. same concept.

Actually it is not off-topic - I specifically asked about this type of technology for the door handles.

Me, tapping wires? You gotta be kidding me bro.

So I assume your not one of those do it yourself type of people huu. You best bet is to contact an alarm installer and see if they can do it for you. Theres going to be some splicing and sodering involved.

Noop suggested I post this thread on http://www.the12volt.com/installbay and the response was so fast and very detailed! http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/...TID=74673&PN=1

Now I just need to find a local installer who knows Compustars very well!

Push start button? Quit trying to steal my thunder!!

Anyway, yeah. It may be pointless but hey, it's cool. From what I know, I think you have to hold down on that button until the engine turns, right? As opposed to just a quick press and release. I'm not sure, though.

Any success in this? I am looking into retrofitting an RFID proximity card type entry and push button ignition sytem into my car as well.

after catching up with about 6months span of posts i wanted to add that Yes, it is doable and has been partially accomplished by a couple guys on a 350z board.

the main problems are bypassing the Steering Wheel lock, and configuring the RFID system (not a problem for any EE familiar with thte tech.)

Range would also be an issue, Lexus has sensors all over the car for its keyless systems on new cars, thats what lets you walk to the trunk and have it open.

if you JUST want the look+feel+SOME of the security you could just hardwire the button in and have a magnetic reed switch hidden behind a panel that you would have to trip with a small magnet in your keychain to put the car into ACC/ON mode
