Maybe b/c of the climate control piece that is missing the wood also. Don't know how or why, maybe I haven't seen a good example yet-just can't put my finger on it

Yes, I would also want to do the climate control piece too. I don't think doing those two pieces will be overkill. The interior of my car has too much black in it and changing those two sections would do a lot towards reducing that boring black.
