I have a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. The key with the transponder is broken but the transponder works. I use a key without a transponder and put it next the broken key and the vehicle starts. But my question is do I have to keep the old key attached to it with a piece of tape through the whole ride or can I just put it way once the vehicle starts?

Just curious, but why haven't you tried taking the key away yet?
But I believe you only need it for starting.
Another option: Although this may make your car easier to start, drop the column covers and tape/glue the transponder to the plastic near the keyhole.
But first thing I'd do is buy a new key.

I took the transponder off the key after it started and the car did not turn off. But I'm scared that it might turn off after a few blocks.
I need to get the car to this locksmith who sells key blanks and knows how to program the key.

That's why your wallet key doesn't have any casing around it. They give you that black credit card size holder and you can start your car with the wallet key while holding the black credit card close to the ignition.
What does the toyota key look like anyway?
