Default Battery Issue

I needed to get a battery jump this morning as my battery was registering 9.1 and I just drove 31 miles and after shutting off the car, I tried to restart it immediately afterward and its a no-go. Completely dead battery.

Any idea why the car didn't regenerate the battery? Is it a completely dewad battery or is there something else wrong withthe car that is preventing it from re-energizing the battery?

Thanks for you help?

The battery goes bad that way.. . The cells short to one another, go open.

After replacing the battery, check the alternator charging with this quick checkout ...

If you have a digital meter, set to 20 Volts DC range .. an analog meter should not be used.

( My tested Reference Voltages Using 575 CCA Battery, in Parentheses )

Using a digital multimeter or voltmeter, connect across the battery using correct polarity... Doors closed, radio off, all accessories off, Engine Off ... 11.8 to 13.2 Volts (12.491 Volts)

Start the car, watch the voltage dip down as the starter cranks... as low as 10.0 Volts... As the car starts and idling ... 13.7 to 14.5 Volts (14.180 Volts)

Increase engine speed to 1500-2000 RPM ...Slight increase in voltage then level off....

Back to idle, voltage again steady at 13.7 to 14.5 Volts .... Voltage should be steady and slowly decreasing as the battery is charged. (14.170 Volts)

(You are reading the alternator output supplied to the battery.)

Shutdown the engine ... Battery maintains 11.8 to 13.2 Volts (13.180 Volts)

Disconnect the meter from the battery terminals...
Replace Positive Battery Terminal Protective Cover

- You are looking for the alternator, when running, charging at a higher voltage than the battery voltage .
Then, the battery maintaining a higher charge than the start of test voltage.
Increasing engine speed checks the voltage regulator, internal to the alternator

- Your charging system is functioning properly if the above condictions are met.

Pick up one of these at Pepboys for 50 bucks. It is an excellent device that recharges your battery and can test your alternator. It saved me

I wen tto my audio shop and they determined that I need a new or more powerful rebuilt alternator. I need it to charge at idle and also to be at 200+ amps.

I seems as though my alternator is not working and isn't recharging the battery, which is causing me to have to go through batteries.

what alternator do you recommend and associated costs?
