Question about 12w6v2 vs 2 10w3

I first ran with a JL Audio 12IB4, but then I decided to go with something a little tighter and cleaner. My first intention was to purchase 2 10w3's, but a audio guy told me to go with 1 12w6v2.
I picked one up, but now I'm thinking about I'm selling it. The sub hits great, but it doesn't sound like it's suppose to. I'm not sure if it's the way the sub is hooked up on the inside voice coils or if my amp is strong enough, but I have to turn the volume high to hear the bass. And when I turn it loud, it distorts. I'm running a Phoenix Gold xs6600 and the sub channel is suppose to push 300wrms x 1 bridged at 4 ohms. I'm not an expert on how to wire dual voice coil subs to the appropriate ohms, so this might be the problem.
I'm thinking that my amp is not strong enough, so I want to get 2 10w3's. Is this the right decision? Should my amp be able to push the w6, or is the w3 a better fit? Thanks!!
This is also going into a 2000 GS.

you have the 12w6 in the stock area? i am not really familiar with your cars stock set up... anyway if you are running the w6 free air or infinite baffle (same thing) it wont sound right because they are not made for an IB set up. also how did you wire it? from amp to + to - to + to - to amp? or seperate leads to each voice coil? i hope that i helped, if not tell me and i will throw more ideas that i have ( or should i say, ways i have wired things wrong in the past) at you.. good luck
