Default Troubleshooting question!!

Alright guys, I need some help, asap. This isn't for a lexus, it's for a 2003 Maxima. My friend and I are doing the install.

Setup: Pioneer P6800MP, JL 300/4, JL E1400D, MB Quart PWE256 (10's, DVC 4ohm each VC).

I ran -4awg from the battery to a fused Dblock to (2) -8awg wiring to each of the amps. I have not tested the 300/4, but it is getting power, as is the E1400D.
The issues is: I am getting faint sound for the subs. They are barely even audible, and when I attempt to turn up the gain I'll get the red light flashing at me. I tried scuffing up the paint so there was a better ground, but it still isn't getting any better. The Subs are wired in series, so that they are each at an 8ohm stable load. this *should* equate to a 4ohm load on the amp, but I am still not getting any sound.

Any guesses as to what I should be looking at? I know my wiring is good, but I just can't figure out what to troubleshoot. Thoughts/guesses are welcome.

When is series, two eight ohm on the same wire equals sixteen ohm, not four.

Remove one from the circuit, see if sound returns on the one eight ohm left..
