Default Improving factory sound

Well, I think I have read about every post on this board.

I have a 98 GS400 with Pioneer sound. I am somewhat happy with it, but really would expect more from a luxary vehicle. Anyway, I was thinking about improving it, but really like the look of factory.

I actually thought about finding a NAV system, but 1) I don't need one, and 2) It sounds like a major hassle. Looked at aftermarket nav and just can't justify the cost for something that I don't need.

My question is... what can I do with my factory system to improve sound quality? Would better speakers and/or an amp help? Keep in mind that I don't want to spend a ton of money and do a lot of work to something that I am 70% satisfied with as-is, but if something like that would make a huge difference then I would consider it. I'm looking for the best improvement for the money.

Thanks!

I ain't much of a sound guy, but I can tell you after installation of my grounding wires, sound is a little smoother and the bass is crisper.

Can you explain what you did? Is this on a stock system?

Pull out the stock subwoofer and add an aftermarket sub and amp. More bass made my stock Nak system sound better. It has decent highs and mids already but if you aren't happy with your tweeters, you might change those to something aftermarket.

I normally do a full aftermarket install on my cars but on the LS I decided to stick with the stock headunit, I thought something else would look really out of place. So far it hasn't bothered me but I do miss being able to play MP3's.

Does an amp just hook up to the speaker wire at the sub, or does it have to go back to the HU?

Yes, I took the wires that went to the sub and connected them to the high level inputs on my amp. If your amp doesn't allow for speaker level inputs then you can always use a line converter.

I think I will replace the speakers and sub and add an amp for the sub with speaker level inputs. Any recomendations on brands/sizes?

Remember, I don't want to go crazy with modificaitons... just good quality sime size speakers. Amp would only need to be modest.

Thanks again!
