98 navi can you change the radio headunit? with out messing up the navigation system

You could loose navi voice depending on how you wire your new stereo. If wirining into the factory harness you might have a chance of keeping the navi voice, but if it mutes when talking you will probably need to connect it to your new stereos 'cell phone mute' lead (if it has one). You can test additional wires in the harness with a volt meter or continuity tester to ground. This will identify the mute lead .

I can tell you that on the 01 LS430 Electrical Wiring Diagrahm it shows the navi ECU between the stereo amplifier and speakers. With this design you will retain navi voice if replacing the stereo.
