Well i though that too until by brother hooked up and aftermarket radio in a 1993 325is using factory amp.
And amazingly it sounds great,,

I dont know much about stereos
but in theory an amp amplifies the signal,, so let say he installed a 4 x40 watt aftermarket radio, now even though the amp output is less then the new radio provides. it amplifies 4x40 watt by a certain amount combining the two together providing lets say 60 x 4 watts total
does this make sence?????????

My only question is why would you want to keep the factory amp with an aftermarket radio? The factory amp doesnt put out nearly the amount of power a cheap 4 channel amp would. I did my stereo the opposite way.. i kept the factory head unit, and added a new 4 channel amp... and bypassed the factory amp, but used it for its output signals. In the end... yes, you could run the new deck into the factory amp... But in my GS.. i know that the factory headunit only has two channels of audio that go into the factory amp.. it is then split into four channels and the stock sub channel...

If you just want a new headunit and keeping your speakers stock then you don't need to upgrade your amp. Because factory speakers sucks and they can only handle so much power. Unless you're upgrading your speakers as well, then you would change your amp. If not then just upgrading your head unit would be alright.

Of course it's possible to use the stock amp. But I would never do it. Most people either run the stock speakers off the new head unit, or upgrade the speakers and run them off a new amp.
