I looked at alternatives a number of years ago (law of physics haven't changed) and the problem is "skin effect" at higher audio frequencies. A cost-effective solution, if it fits in your application, is PC ribbon cable; using maybe 12 conductors (6+, 6-). Thicker single conductors only increase loss ratio between low frequencies and high frequencies.
