I would love to add a mini stereo jack to my 2001 GS430, but I doubt that that is doable. I currently play my ipod through the tape cassette interface, but have had some problems. In the morning, when I push the cassette interface into the player, it plays for a few seconds, sometimes a minute, sometimes even longer, but then the cassette interface housing gets ejected. I can keep pushing it back in, and eventually, after a few tries, it stays. Lately, when the ambient temperature got higher, the cassette gadget seems to be less finicky, and stays put. I'm not sure if the cassette adapter is at fault(could be binding or too much friction) or it could be that the cassette player in the dash is failing.
Also, the fidelity of the ipod is generally good/acceptable, but there are times when I can hear the electronic noise between songs, as if I have the output of the ipod too low and the volume on the Mark Lev too high. I can increase the output of the ipod, but going above halfway overdrives the cassette head of the player introduces some distortion.
Is there a quality alternative? Years ago, in another car, I tried that FM transmitter gadget, but I probably bought a too cheap one, because it also introduces alternator noise. Has technology advanced recently to where the FM transmitter(s) are better?
