My two 12"s that sit in the trunk eat up about 70% of the space. Are there any work-arounds for that? Any custom enclosures that fit snug on the sides or something? I don't want to install an after market free-air in the original stock sub slot, because from what I hear, most of them are crap. So any suggestions, SC400 owners?

a custom shop would be able to fabricate something for you, however it won't be very cheap... either way, you will need subs that are designed for low sealed enclosures, and you will most likely lose some low end frequency response...

A lot of them are crap but there are a lot of good subs that will work there. You just have to do a little searching. We have discussed a lot of them here.

Like mitsuguy said, when you go with a smaller box, you will need to change your subs as well. Subs that work in a smaller box will have a very powerful motor to overcome the small amount of airspace. Most also have a very low sensitivity. This means to get the same amount of sound you are accustomed to hearing, you will need more power as well. That's why they call it Hoffman's Iron Law. You can't cheat it.

Get a single TC-2000 -- sell the pair you have-- voila-- half the space--

OR -- ditch the spare, build a custom glass enclosure into the spare well that flush mounts the sub to the trunk floor-- I bet there's 1.4~ ft^3 to be had in the spare well-- Put a single TC-2000 in there--

I'm assuming you have enough amp power to run this sub-- you'll need about 750~ + rms for it --



Then just add roadside assistance to your cell-provider --

There's 1.4~ ft^3 to be had in the side of the trunk, too, without using up the spare tire well.

My enclosure shown is 1.3, and can be made bigger by moving the baffle board inwards.

Nice work there PERRYinLA. Looks like you're pushing an Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1? I run two of those in separate enclosures, they're reasonably priced, hit very hard and clean, and each sealed enclosure, as per Infinity's specs, is only 1 cu. ft. or so.

That's probably better there in the side-- but the jack is under there-- How hard is it to slide out of the way to get to it?

In any case, depends upon how tightly it is fitted when the fiberglass is laid.

Sometimes it is jammed in there so tight it won't come out- period. The trick is not to follow every single contour of the cavity but instead leave some slack, so you can wriggle it out when needed. Most fiberglassers use modeling clay to smooth out the crevices.

It takes a lot of extra time, but you can smooth out the tight curves and get it so that it just glides in there, and then as you reach that final position, it stays put with a press-fit.

I like the Single sub idea, actually. I'd like the TC-2000, but, my PG amp can't support it. I remember there was another TC, right under the 2000. I don't know if my amp can power that one also. Here are the specs for my amp. I would link you but every one of my links seem to die so here:

MJ, you seem to think highly of TC, so I'll try to stick with it if possible. But, you guys are welcome to suggestions. Remember, a Single Sub that the above amp can support. My current 12" kicker subs are not doing it. Total of about 300RMS with both of them together.. weak!

hmmm-- get a new amp-- class d monoblocks are too cheap these days to complain about the expense--

A TC1000 12 with a hifonics bx106d or whatever would work great-- it would run the amp half power at about 600w @ 2ohms -- total cost would be about $450 for the sub, amp, and fiberglass materials-- pretty close to that-- The sub would need 1.1 ft^3 --
