Default Questions about sub/amp configuration and impedance.

As some of you know, I just recently purchased a TC-9 12" subwoofer not too long ago. I have a Zapco amp that pushes 850 x 1 into a 4 ohm load. The TC-9 is rated at 800w rms.

Now, my question is, should I utilize the DVC and configure it so the amp sees 2 ohm load and pushes 1350 x1? I know that's more than the recommended rms rating for this sub but I've heard on other car audio related forums that this sub can take more. Of course, I'm pretty sure I'd have to turn the gain down some.

Will there be any adavntage dropping the impedance and giving this sub more power? Sonically, what affect if any will this have on SQ? Oh and if it makes any difference, the sub is going to be in a ported enclosure.

Thanks in advance

Can your Zapco drive a 2 ohm x 1 load? You really only have 2 options - run the voice coils in parallel for 2 ohms or in series for 8 ohms. You should not power a single voice coil unless you know exactly what you are doing. It will cut the power handling in half (so your TC-9 would handle 400w) and it dramatically changes the T/S parameters.

Since the sub will be in a ported enclosure, make sure you have a SSF or you have it tuned low enough so the driver won't unload. Especially if you will drive it with over 1K watts.

I would definitely run it so that the amp sees a 2ohm load, and that way you have some headroom with your amp gains to run the reccomended power with less distortion.
