Default Can law enforcement locate me via my Factory Lexus Navigation System?

HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING - if I was abducted/carjacked or wanted to "disappear" and I'm in my 2004 Lexus with factory NAV and I drive to say Mexico or Canada or elsewhere, could law enforcement EASILY track me and my car down or no?

Just curious.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe only if the actual registered owner (you) authorized it to Lexus? I'm not sure. I would imagine there is a lot of legal stuff involved in this...

Just think about it, if you can look on a map and see yourself, why wouldn't someone else be able to?

Technically, yes and no.

Yes being that they can track down you car at it's LAST position, to it's current position. However, being that your car was hijacked, the jacker probably stripped off the navigation, cutting off the signals to the satellites.

Default GPS is a Passive System

GPS is a passive system and does not require transmission to a satellite to operate. GPS uses a minimum number of received satelite transmissions and the time between them to calculate your ground position. Usually three satellites are required for 20' resolution. The more satellites the more accurate the location. Currently the only systems that can sabotage a carjacker require terrestial communication such as the cellular network for OnStar. Lojack seems to use its own radio system compatible with police equipment since cellular and gps can be easily defeated by removing line of sight, distance, or shielding.

so since it's "passive" and does not transmit, the answer is no?

thanks.
