Default Adding a sub with out changing amp

Is there anyway to add a more powerful sub to the 2003 ML system in an SC430, with out changing the amp? I've heard that it can seriously mess up the amp, and that the performance gains will not be noticeable. I was just wondering if adding a more powerful 10 inch sub to the ML system would make a difference. And I know next to nothing about the sound system, Thanks guys

you cant add another sub to what it can not handle. most stock amp can only handle 40 watt rms. if you go above that your either going to blow out your sub or fry the amp. its time to pick up some aftermarket amps

First, subs are not "powerful". Subs handle power. Some subs have more capability in both extension and output than other subs but they need proper amplification to reach that capability.

It will only "mess up the amp" if your replacement sub has a lower impedance than the factory model. You run the risk of overheating or even frying the factory amp. Unless you know the Theile/Small parameters of the factory sub, the replacement may have less performance. Buying a sub with more capibility in extension will probably result in lower output. Most high performance subs trade sensitivity for extension (the ability to play low notes). This requires a more powerful amp just to reach the output of the factory sub. Where you will notice a difference will be when you turn it up. Where the factory sub would start to distort and reach its limits, a high performance sub will be coasting along. And by high performance, I mean one with adequate excursion, proper T/S parameters for the alignment that it is installed in and being powered by a proven model of amp.
