What not to do: JBL GTO427 speakers
I thought one of my front speakers in my GS400 was shorting out, and I took apart my door, and it ended up having a loose connection, so that fixed it.
During the disassembly process (about a 2/5 difficulty level, relatively easy: 7 screws, and some clips to snap up to get the door cover off), I did attempt replacing the front door speaker with some 2-ohm JBL GTO427 4" speakers as a direct replacement. All that I can say is this--it's not worth the hassle. The JBL's sounded VERY flat and muddled, despite being impedance matched. I considered the Infinity Reference 4" as well (also 2-ohm), but they are made by the same parent company (Harmon Kardon), so I would imagine they would sound similar as the JBLs. The stock speaker really doesn't sound that bad in comparision--I'll stick with it as fabricating MDF with component speakers, amplifiers, and cross-overs is quite a bit more than I'd like to do.
Nonetheless, I'm wanting just a bit more oomph from the 10" bass speaker on the rear deck as well--anyone have any ideas on what they did? Just looking for a direct replacement and/or very minimal upgrading in amplifier and speaker components. Not looking to go to any competition, just looking for a little more bass from the current setup.
Some info about the GS400 speakers that may be helpful (you may already know this):
2G GS OEM Speaker sizes:
Front: 4" midrange (2-ohms) with 1" tweeter
Rear: 4" midrange (4-ohms)
Sub: 10" free air (not sure on ohm-rating)

I've changed my sub and added mono amp, kicker c10 sub and kicker zx300 amp, with high level output, wiring and install, all comes to $660 CND, took them 4 hours to finish and I'm more than happy with the result as I like bass more than treb, and treb I'm fine with the stock speakers.
The sub have been discussed about here for many times and it's proven to be good as it's a free air sub so you can mount it in place of the OEM sub.
Though yes the speakers sometimes cuts out a bit, that's another thing though, and rare for me, if yours cuts out frequently, you can tell them to looks at it anyways...
And yes, now I've got rattles in the back somewhere, not that much, only when I actually turn it up then there might be some rattles, but expected as I didn't do anything like dynomat at all, and I'm fine with that as I listen in mild volume.
