I am on my 4th Lexus battery in 2.5 years.
First one died and the Lexus dealer replaced it and only charged me
$23(prorated, according to them) It lasted about a year and then
nearly died. The engine had a hard time turning over and I had to
jumpstart the battery. Drove to the dealer and the replaced it
for free.
The second battery lasted a little over a year. I actually didn't
experience any problem with it. However, during a routine service,
the Lexus service advisor told me that the battery didn't pass
the test and again they installed a new one for free. They also
checked my alternator and other electrical stuff, but determined
that the battery simply failed to hold a charge.
Well... the third one died this morning. It was freezing cold, at
around 15 degrees. I had to leave my RX300 outside last night
because my garage floor is being re-painted. I went out to
start it and nothing... I tested the battery with a voltmeter and
it only registered 8.7 volts. I jumped it and drove to the dealer.
They checked my alternator and everything else again. Again,
the battery turned out to be the problem.
If Lexus hadn't kept replacing it for free, I would have probably
bought a better battery like Optima... but being a cheap person,
I kept letting them put in new batteries for free....

even once in an airport parking lot, causing the battery to go completely
flat... would that have killed the batteries(or caused premature failure)?

If you drain a battery sufficiently by leaving a door open or a light on, you will certainly shorten it's life. You're lucky the dealer replaced it, but definitely try to be more careful.

Absolutely! The "traditional" car battery is meant to serve one purpose - start the car. The alternator the recharges it and runs the car. Before the voltage became more sensitive due to computers, you could jump a car then pull the battery out and it would run until you shut it off because it was all going off the alternator.

made so much money off me, a $70 Lexus battery wouldn't kill them...

The service history on my car shows a battery replacement every 2 to 2 1/2 years. I don't think you have a charging problem necessarily. The batteries are not that good. I switched to Die Hard and I get about 4-5 years out of those and the prorate the replacements.
