Default Steering wheel audio control pod question..

Hi Guys,
New member here. Just picked up a '02 GS 430 and have a question. My car has a 'dealer installed' (I guess, not on window sticker) Lexus mobile phone kit... phone/cradle is in the upper console, 'Lexus' phone system manuals/ref. guides are included in owners documentation, interfaced into nav system, special control 'pod' on steering wheel that controls 'on-hook/off-hook', phone/ringer volume is installed where the normal audio pod would be. I would like to rid myself of this now obsolete phone kit. I intend to remove the phone components and replace the steering wheel 'pod' with the normal one that controls the audio system (levinson). I'm pretty sure the harness is just beneath the pod, and will just plug in (like it originally was). Has anyone else made this switch? and can someone guide me to a parts manual/reference so I can find the correct part numbers for the pod (and upper steering column cover - has hands-free mic. mounted there). Any guidance would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

Better late than never -- I try to answer phone questions but I missed yours.

The website shown in the attached images might help you with component removal and the part numbers you need. I think the 2002 phone system used a Qualcomm handset and that the carrier was Sprint -- it was not pretty when Lexus dumped Sprint and went with Cingular/ATT for the 2003 model year phone system that used a Nokia 6310i handset.

So the controls are for a phone?

Are there no AUDIO controls for the steering wheel that mount on the left side of the wheel?

Correct. The installation of the Lexus phone system substituted a phone control for the audio control.

bmackinnon will have to buy/find an audio control. The original audio control may have been given to the car's original owner when the phone system was installed - or maybe not.

bmackinnon,

Attached are instructions for a procedure that must be performed before removing the phone command module from the steering wheel of your GS430 and installing an audio control model. The procedure essentially "toggles" the circuit for the 6-pin connector in the steering wheel between phone and audio modes.

The instructions are an excerpt from European phone system install instructions (too big to post on this forum) but I think they are the same as for U.S. models. I know a similar procedure had to be performed on the early LS430 when switching between the use of the audio control and the phone control on the steering wheel.

The full instructions are in the "Accessory Installation Manuals" section at http://www.lexus-tech.eu It may take some looking to find the English language version that I found. I had to make the excerpt quite small to upload to this forum, so you might want to find one of the full install manuals on lexus-tech.eu . You will find several install manuals for different phone systems but all contain the same "Steering Wheel Switch Mode Setting" procedure.

Good luck! And it would be nice if you would post your results.

Fantastic! Thanks to a friend who is a 12 yr master tech at Lexus, I am in the process of acquiring access to the factory toyota.tis service info/site, and I'd be willing to bet that the above instructions are included or referenced in phone installation details. That said, THANK YOU for going above and beyond in your research to help me! I look forward to being able to do the same for others.

You are correct about needing to acquire the switch module and housing..... and it's not looking very promising for a used part solution... the swich module retails for $285 at the dealer but I am committed to un-doing the phone installation and will keep my progress/results updated here. Liking this forum more and more.... Thanks again for your help!
