Has anyone tried using one with a factory headunit? cause i saw a tv show where you can keep the stock headunit and use a line output converter to plug in a aftermarket amp/sub.

You can definitely use a regular LOC, but you may be better served by the offerings from JL, AudioControl, and Rockford that will take the signal, sum it together, and create clean outputs. They are - Cleansweep, LC6 or LC8, or 360.2.
As for the factory radio, not sure if it doesn't have a code, but you have to keep in mind that it probably has some internal capacitance, as I've replaced batteries and not had to completely reprogram everything.

All you would need to do is go to the speaker location, assuming the rear deck underside, Ttap into the rear speaker leads there, that way can fade the base if you want, Its a relatively standard practice, if someone wants to add sub and amp, retaining stock head unit.
The only time i would change the install is if you have a factory sub, then i would tap into that wire set, so can retain factory sub control
