Replacement Speakers for '90 Lexus LS 400
I'm trying to get a handle on the type of speakers I should acquire to replace the facory sepakers. The factory setup in my '90 LS 400 is the Premium Sound package furnished by Pioneer. I want to keep the factory head unit but want to replace the tweeter/mid ragnge in the front doors, the two ways in the rear doors and the sub in the back. I've talked to a couple of people and have been told I need to buy speakers from the dealer because if they don't match the specs of the originals it will sound crappy or I may blow the amp. The dealer is useless. They said they don't have any info on the speaker specs and they want a ridiculous amount of money for factory speakers. Does anybody have any info on the factory specs or suggestions on the type of speakers that will work?

Here's a previous discussion on the SC that might help...
The stereos are similar, so perhaps this is a good place to start:

Many of us have upgraded our speakers with standard 4-ohm car speakers and I've not heard of any horror stories yet. Here's a few more threads- it is a lot of reading, but you'll know a lot more about this issue after reading them:

Re 1990 LS-400 Replacement Speakers
I replaced the rear 4" speakers with a set of infinity kappa 42.5i speakers($66) on ebay. They don't play as loud as the factory but are much cleaner sounding. They fit right into the factory opening but I left the foam baffle off. I replaced the sub with a JL Audio 8IB4($105) from a local store. I had to break off the top of the factory mounting bracket(which the old sub was attached to) and put the JL in that bracket. Then it fit right into the opening. I have ordered a pair of Infinity Kappa 40.2CS components for the front doors($150). This is what I would call the poor mans simple upgrade. You can get great instructions on taking the door panels off on www.retrodrive.net.
