This was an annoyance with my 4Runners, and it's the same now that I've migrated to Lexus: Apparently there's no way to keep the station/mode indicator displayed for more than a few seconds before disappearing. It's possible to turn the Auto Screen Change to Off in the settings menu, but this only applies to the glaring full screen Audio display, not the discreet little strip that appears momentarily when you change stations or modes. I've seen other posts here about this issue.
There's no reason I can think of not to have the little audio program strip displayed persistently, just like a traditional car radio. It's not distracting, and burn-in is not an issue with LCD screens. You could toggle it on or off by, for example, pressing the Display Off button for a couple of seconds. This isn't rocket science or an expensive mod -- just a firmware update.
Being able to glance over and see what's playing should be a basic display function. Toyota/Lexus omit, for no good reason, what used to be an integral dashboard display.
