I don't know how to hardwire but for which one is the best, I've heard many good reviews from V1 & Passport. Those 2 really seem to be at the top for radar detectors.
Cheapest place to buy online, guess it all depends on how hard you look, these things are expensive.
Good luck!

for hardwiring, you would need to find a 12v source thats on when you want it to be on ie when the car is running, so find a source that would be on when the ignition is on. i would try to find something as close as to where you want to mount it.

I like the Valentine, but it has far too many false alarms (which cause me to ignore the detector all together), and turning off the X-band detector is not a viable option.
That is why I switched to the Escort Passport 9500ix with GPS technology (which eliminates false alarms). You can it for $499.95 through drugstore.com, and then using bing you can get 20% off, so the total is really $400 with free shipping. Escort also told me drugstore.com is an authorized reseller, so no worries about warranty's, support, etc.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

For Valentine there are no discount retail outlets other than direct for new. You'll get lucky sometimes on ebay, but since the V1 units can be upgraded they don't often go for too much of a discount. Def check craigslist
There are literally hundreds of threads about radar detectors on this forum and elsewhere. Since this topic doesn't deal with the 2IS specifically I'm moving it to the electronics forum. I'd suggest just doing a broad search for keywords 'valentine' or 'valentine passport' and you'll get all the info you need with no waiting.
Example threads

i would get the escort instead of a valentine. i have the escort 8500xi and it works great. i know the valentine has arrows telling you where they are but i didn't want to deal with false alarms either. good luck on your purchase, it'll be a worthwhile investment FOR SURE.

no doubt it is a good investment since one speeding ticket pretty much cost as much as the radar itself. i had the v1 for 3+ years and its been great to me(probably save me from 4-5 speed trap and potential tickets). BUT i been noticing that police are starting to switch to lasers which is almost impossible to prevent since they dont have it on all the time, they just point and shoot. i only gotten 2 ticket in the last 8 years and both of them is because of lasers, though i was able to slow down a couple miles before it register. just wanna let you know before making your purchase.

My friend that has tried both of them prefers the Passport, V1 is great with the arrows but like others said, the false alarms get annoying.
+1 with what aznpapaya said about lasers.

I have used an Escort 8500 for about three years. I have it concealed in a sun glasses pouch on the sun visor where it's not visible except by opening the flap. It’s wired into the dome light. This unit has paid for itself many times over. I don't usually drive more than 5 MPH over the limit but there are so many places where you find your speed creeping up. Unfortunately, the cops know about these places and next thing you know, you are looking at a green (Washington State) slip of paper with a dollar amount on it that starts at about 130 and goes up from there.
You can't go wrong buying one of the current name brand detectors. I am going to get a new Escort with GPS tech.
The three absolute truths about traffic radar:
1) Traffic radars primary purpose is revenue generation. Not traffic safety.
2) If you get stopped for ANY reason and the LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) sees a radar detector, you WILL get a ticket.
3) Cops say there is no quota on writing tickets. Don’t believe that for a second.
